In Our Waiting GOD Is Working
I began writing this blog post on April 21st and never finished it. Then was reminded of this truth today while watching my friend Cate give a devotional on Cascade Community Church’s Facebook page. You can catch it here.
When we went through our adoption process, we experienced a LOT of waiting. The process is like this: Hurry Up! Now wait! And wait without knowing an end to the waiting.
On July 18th, 2017 I wrote that “there is joy, hope, comfort, and indescribable peace knowing that in our waiting, God is working. And most importantly, God is in control. “ And this truth rings true TODAY. But even in our waiting, know this, that does NOT mean we sit idly by doing nothing. That does not mean that we forget the Great Commission (Matthew 28) and binge Netflix. That does not mean that we go into our homes, close the doors and wish the world good luck.
In James 5:7-8 it says:
“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.”
After a farmer sows their seeds, there is a long waiting period from sowing seed to harvesting. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t work for the farmer to do. What the farmer DOESN’T do is sow their seed, then walk away from the field and wish it luck. No, there is much work that takes place in the waiting season of the harvest.
In a season of waiting, in a season of uncertainty, in a season that feels chaotic, GOD – IS – STILL – WORKING. In a season that feels as though there is no movement, there is still work to be done.
Those who profess to be Believers of Christ have ONE main calling and great commission on their lives, to go and make disciples of all nations and FOLLOW Jesus. This calling was not just to a select few who would then devote their lives to living this out full times as missionaries, pastors, etc. But it was both a command and a call for ALL believers.
Seasons of waiting can cause idleness. It can cause us to feel like floundering fish looking for the pool of water. But just as Moses tells the Israelites just before they cross over into the promised land in the book of Deuteronomy 9:3
“But be assured today that the Lord your God is the One who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire.”
GOD is the one who leads and we follow. He goes before us and we walk behind. The way He leads us is through His Word. To know fully know the plans and purposes for our life must read His word, seek His face, and follow Jesus. When we do this, we can visually see the hand of God moving in a mighty way. We can see past our human desires and see heavenly movement. We can see that while it may SEEM that we are waiting, HE is truly working.
